Originally called ‘Yoga for Dancers’, the GYROKINESIS® Method is an exercise system that gently invigorates the entire body, awakening energy pathways, stimulating the nervous system, increasing range of motion and creating functional, supple strength through rhythmic, flowing movement sequences. It is an original, and unique movement practice, which has roots in Yoga, Tai Chi, gymnastics, and dance.
Smoothly and harmoniously connected into a flow similar to dance, the exercises use gentle repetitive circling, spiraling and undulating movements with a specific rhythm, using the breath as a key ingredient. Gentle, yet invigorating, the GYROKINESIS® Method works to create space in the body, mobilizing the joints and articulating the spine in all of its 7 directions, supporting to restore a healthy, balanced posture and alignment of the spine.
At the end of a session, one’s entire system is awakened, brought into greater balance, and leaving a sense of renewed vitality, calm and mental clarity.
Each GYROKINESIS® class begins on a chair with a gentle warm up sequence to awaken the senses, and stimulate the nervous system. This is followed by a series of fluid spinal motions which increase range of motion, and prepare the body to explore more complex movements with agility, and ease. Class continues on the floor with exercises that expand on the spinal motions, gradually adding more complex sequences, incorporating more movements of the hips, shoulders, hands and feet. The floor exercises are followed by a rhythmic standing sequence that incorporates balance, and cardiovascular exercises; then ends with a calming, unwinding sequence designed to prepare the body and mind to reintegrate with the every day world.
GYROKINESIS® method classes can be adapted to fit anyone's ability. People from all age and walks of life, including accomplished athletes and dancers, senior citizens, and people with disabilities practice the GYROKINESIS® method.

This creative workshop is assembled to invite dancers to expand their expression of movement, into another dimension, as they explore contemporary movement and dance in the air. Using aerial hoop and trapeze, students will be invited to playfully explore this new space and how to creatively work with and against gravity. By blending the different worlds of floor and air into one unified space, dancers will seamlessly move from one to the other. Finally, students will get a chance to explore partner work in the air.
After a contemporary dance warm-up, the basic foundations of aerial dance will be taught: learning proper body placement and alignment, conditioning and power exercises to prepare the body to be in the air safely and comfortably.
Through improvisation, dancers will be introduced to the apparatus and the space in the air. Students will then learn separate skills and sequences on each apparatus. Parallels will be drawn and communicated between the different apparatus, as well as exploring how the choreographic vocabulary can be transferred from the floor to the air, and respectively, from the air to the floor. Dancers will then be provided an opportunity to explore partner work on the apparatus through improvisation and set skills.
Pulling all the elements together, students will finally have the opportunity to choreograph their own aerial dance piece to creatively expand their expression and range of contemporary movement.
